bio

Nick George (Epsom, 1964) began his career as a paste-up artist and studied at the Berkshire College of Art & Design. He later qualified as a teacher from the University of Reading and went on to teach Art in state schools. He retired early from his role as School Atelierista to focus on his own art practice. Now based in Dorset, he works both in his studio and his local woods and forest.

For many years he painted landscapes, predominantly in oils, but in the past year has aligned his work with his ethical and environmental understanding. He is interested in the interrelationship between people and nature, particularly trees, and recent explorations have resulted in three-dimensional installations made with repurposed tree-based products. He was a member of Newlyn School of Art’s 2025-26 Professional Landscape Artists’ Programme and exhibited early pieces of his new direction at their end-of-year exhibition at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens

artist statement

I am a contemporary multi-disciplined artist who creates wall pieces, free standing and suspended forms using reclaimed and recyclable materials. I like to use the push and pull of transparency and opacity to question what exists and what is believed to exist. I explore our symbiotic relationship with nature and I am interested in the conversations lost in a rapidly accelerating technological world, our ongoing and future planet stewardship and our historic, emotional and spiritual connections with our environment.

My pieces begin with slow observations made in nature and recorded by sketch, paint, poetry or photography. I forage my local Dorset woods, fields and forests for funghi, leafs and soils to produce pigments that directly relate to my subject. Where quality isn’t compromised, I use ecologically responsible and recycled materials to make my pieces and will often co-create with natural forces, such as weather, fire and water.
